Kia ora parents and whanau,

As teachers, learning in child development is ongoing. Part of our professional development is to attend a Child Protection Course every other year. This term our team of kindergarten teachers attended such a course in Whakatane. We have found it very valuable as we are provided with the knowledge and tools where we need to be concerned and to better support children and Whanau.

The overview of the course covered childhood sexual behaviour, child abuse and neglect. Sexual behaviour in young children can be a part of natural curiosity, which is spontaneous and light-hearted. This can include games such as doctors and nurses, enjoyment of being nude and interest in body parts of our own and/or others. Unfortunately, child abuse is prevalent in our society. As teachers, we are provided with the tools to help recognise abuse such as neglect, emotional, physical, and sexual.

If you have questions or would like more information, please contact your teachers.

Warm blessings to you all.

from the Teachers of the Rose Ring Kindergartens
